[To the Elbe]
By April 1 the Germans were faced by reverses on all fronts. Hitler had either completely underestimated our strength, refusing to believe the Allies capable of striking into and beyond the center of Germany or he was still expecting a miracle, to extricate him at the last moment from his ignominious predicament. The dregs of the Wehrkreise appeared on all fronts fighting side by side with the weary Wehrmacht and ragged Volkssturm. Radio Berlin still droned about "shortening lines", "inflicting tremendous losses", carried on by the momentum of earlier propaganda policies. There was yet no indication of national surrender although individual surrender increased every day. The only apparent strategy was to delay, delay for what purpose, no one, not even the German High Command itself, was sure.
