The following intelligence report on the German 4.2-cm Pak 41 tapered bore antitank gun was published in Tactical and Technical Trends, No. 41, December 30, 1943. ADDITIONAL DATA -- GERMAN 42/28-MM AT GUN Previous reference to this gun (commonly known as the 4.2-cm Pak 41) was reported in Tactical and Technical Trends, No. 37, p. 4, as well as in issues No. 19, p. 5; No. 17, p. 12 and No. 7, p. 3. The development of German antitank guns has been characterized by a succession of types involving improved versions of earlier models. All this has been coincident with an equivalent development of armor-piercing ammunition. The latest information on some of the characteristics of the 4.2-cm Pak 41 AT gun gives the muzzle velocity as 4,580 f/s and not 4,100 f/s as indicated in Tactical and Technical Trends No. 37, p. 5. It appears that the mount for the 4.2-cm Pak 41, although similar to the German 37-mm antitank mount differs in several particulars, noticeably the shape and appearance of the shield. Earlier specimens of this gun were equipped with a muzzle brake which served further to identify it.
