PENETRATION RANGE 75-MM PAK 41 AMMUNITION

Translation of an enemy document reveals that the 75-mm tapered bore antitank gun, Pak 41, fires two types of AP ammunition. These types are designated respectively as 7.5-cm Pz Gr (armor-piercing shell) 41 (HK) Pak 41, and 7.5-cm Pz Gr 41 (W) Pak 41. The translated document states that because the former type is manufactured from scarce metals, it must be used only when the latter type would not be effective. For previous reference to the 75-mm antitank gun, Pak 41, see Tactical and Technical Trends, No. 40, p. 5.

The following ranges are given in the translated document for use of the two types of 75-mm Pak 41 ammunition against the Sherman tank:

       AP (HK)    AP (W)

Turret
front (exclusive gun mantlet)   660   110
   sides (center only) 1,650   660
rear (except curved surfaces) 1,650   660
