Cossack cavalry, impressed into German service, was a valuable asset in policing
mountainous Balkan terrain. This German-controlled cavalry represented only a
small percentage of the total number of horse and horse-drawn units which, together
with pack units, made up most of the "highly-mechanized" German Army.
