Bill Mauldin's Willie and Joe
William "Bill" Mauldin (1921-2003) is undoubtably the most famous cartoonist of
World War II. Mauldin served in the U.S. 45th Infantry Division where he
began drawing the cartoon GIs Willie and Joe for the 45th Division News. Later, Mauldin
transferred to the staff of the Stars & Stripes soldier's newspaper, where he
continued his Willie and Joe series. Mauldin died in 2003, but his work lives on in print
and online.
