- Maj. Gen. Edward Martin
- February 1941 - December 1941. Gen. Martin later served as governor of
Pennsylvania.
- Maj. Gen. James Garesche Ord
- January 1942 - May 1942. (Some sources list dates as Feb. - June 1942.)
Gen. Ord was formerly assistant division commander of
1st Infantry Division. He
later served as head of the Joint Brazil-US. Defense Commission. Gen. Ord
retired in 1946.
- Maj. Gen. Omar N. Bradley
- June 1942 - January 1943. Gen. Bradley later commanded II Corps,
First Army, and 12th Army Group. After WWII, Gen. Bradley served as the first
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and was promoted
to General of the Army. Gen. Bradley died in 1981.
- Maj. Gen. Lloyd D. Brown
- January 1943 - July 1944. (Other sources list dates as Feb. 1943 - Aug. 1944.)
- Brig. Gen. James E. Wharton
- August 1944. Gen. Wharton formerly served as commander of 1st Engineer
Special Brigade and assistant division commander of
9th Infantry Division.
- Maj. Gen. Norman D. Cota
- August 1944 - Inactivation. Gen. Cota was formerly assistant division commander of
the 29th
Infantry Division. Gen. Cota won the Distinguished Service Cross
for heroism during the 29th's landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day.
